Priory Woods School & Arts College A Special Place to Learn

Religious Education (RE)

Religious Education (RE) is a statutory subject of the curriculum for all pupils in each year group and ‘should be provided for all registered pupils except those withdrawn at the request of their parents.’ (s 71 SSFA 1998) Parents have the right to request that their son or daughter be excused from all or part of the RE provided at school. The syllabus reflects the fact that 'religious traditions in Great Britain are in the main Christian, while taking account of the teaching and practices of the other principal religions represented in Great Britain.’ (s375 (3) Education Act 1996)

Our RE cycle and lessons offer a broad and rich RE curriculum to allow for coverage of the areas prescribed; to allow for a variety of ways to explore religions, their community and personal development and wellbeing. Through each area of our RE cycle children will be exposed to, and some will know about and understand, a range of religions and world views. Some will be able to identify, investigate and respond to a variety of issues. Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development (SMSC), personal growth and community cohesion are featured throughout the curriculum, and we ensure opportunities for children to develop positive attitudes and values and to reflect on and relate their learning in RE to their own experiences. The intent is to make sure that children have the exposure to and understand the relevance of RE in today’s modern world and how it affects our lives.
