Challenge

Lower School 

Throughout lower school The World Around Me is taught through topic  based work  to ensure pupils are exposed to Geography, History, R.E., Cultural Capital and Humanities.

  • · Tuff tray days - an opportunity for pupils to learn and explore different cultures, celebrations e.g. Chinese New Year and Diwali.
  • · Allowing them to opportunity to find their way around school; through transitions, class duties and job roles. 
  • · Outdoor learning including PALO, Forest school, bike track and gardening.
  • · Educational trips - museums, galleries, theatres, cinemas, parks
  • · Celebration based sessions e.g. Religious celebrations, birthdays
  • · Assemblies
  • · Sensory stories
  • · Small world and play
  • · Creative sessions - singing, music, art , dance and drama.

Upper School 

Throughout upper school The World Around Me is taught through subject specific lessons which link to the current topic, this ensures pupils are exposed to Geography, History, R.E., Cultural Capital and Humanities.

History -

  • · Learning and researching significant events and dates in History.
  • · Local and personal history.
  • · Working with museums to create exhibitions and explore artefacts.

R.E. -

  • · Developing knowledge and understanding around different cultures and religions
  • · Religious and celebration based lessons
  • · PSHE and RSE lessons

Geography -

  • · Developing knowledge and understanding of the world - climate, cultures, population
  • · Map reading and planning visits
  • · Environmental awareness - litter picking, climate change, pollution, recycling.
  • · Outdoor learning  including Forest school, bike track and gardening.
  • · Educational visits and residential visits.

 

Post 16

The World Around me is delivered within the four Preparation for Adulthood pathways; Employment, Independent Living, Community Inclusion and Health. Challenge learners in Post 16 are given the opportunity to develop knowledge and understanding about the world around them through subject and non-subject specific lessons and have the opportunity to gain qualifications through ASDAN.
